Had a frustrating experience and wasted  work  time  because  the
principle of least surprise (POLS) is violated in mysql's special
treatment of connections with the hostname `localhost'.  In  such
cases  the  port is ignored (because IIRC not network sockets but
local unix sockets are used).  [0]

Violating the principle of least surprise always has a cost!
