My suggestion for applying a command to all  files  listed  in  a
text file:  [0]

     <files.txt xargs -d \\n chmod 644

It works in all cases, except those with  newline  characters  in
the  file  names.  (But they are anyway illegal if you define the
file to contain each line one filename.)

The while-read approach is good as well (if correctly quoted).

If your command accepts only a single filename argument, then you
can  use  `-n  1'  with  xargs  or the while-read approach, which
furthermore allows to put the filename somewhere else but at  the
end of the command line.
