Don't forget: <pre> is no \verbatim{}!

<pre> just means pre-formatted text, i.e. leave the whitespace as
it is. It has nothing to do with escaping.

\verbatim (in Latex speak) is  both:  preserving  whitespace  and
taking text literally. It's a combination of <pre> and CDATA.
