I jumped on a discussion about interval expressions  in  awk  and
had a loser look:  [0]

The essence is:

     Interval expressions were not  traditionally  available
     in  the AWK language. The POSIX standard added them, to
     make awk and egrep consistent with each other.

... and mawk does not support them.
