Did some layout work with Scribus today.  For  the  picture  pre-
processing  I  used the Gimp. (I like to keep photo manipulations
low, but I thus prefer to remove annoying elements that stand out
of  otherwise  homogenous  backgrounds.)  Both  programs serve me
well.


btw: In former times, I used Macromedia Fireworks (version  4)  a
lot.  In  my  eyes,  no image manipulation program, I came across
since, could really provide the Fireworks experience.
