2015-02-05 Yesterday, I've visited the OpenStreetMap meeting in Stuttgart. This was a wonderful experience! It all began one and half years ago, when I had been in DE-MV at lake Mueritz for holidays. I realized that the OSM showed a suspicious street at a place where there was none. It looked as if it would be a map bug. I wasn't sure if the OSM has web bugs, hence I didn't ask on a public mailing list. I wanted to ask some mappers on a personal meeting what they think of if. Well, I nev- er really managed to do this. It was on my todo list for over a year. Then, last November, I decided to solve it. I wanted to visit the OSM meeting in Ulm. To ensure that they really meet as mentioned, I asked via the hackspace by email. I never received a response. (My experiences with the frrm hadn't been good any- ways.) Then, one week ago, I made a trip to the Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchiv Wiesbaden (the main archive of the German state Hessen, which is located in Wiesbaden). I was a bit puzzled that it wasn't mapped on the OSM. It's a public building, similar to a library, but at its location was a blank spot. I had to use Goo- gle Maps, which I haven't had to do for many months because of such reasons. This was the motivation to finally meet some OSM mappers and to improve things. My mail to the OSM group of Mainz/Wiesbaden was never answered, neither. But then, I contacted the OSM group of Stuttgart ... and received a response within a day. And even more: They discussed real map- ping issues on the list. This meant that they were truly active! What a different impression to me! Yesterday, I've been at their meeting, and I felt so welcome, much more than in any computer community I've entered! They cared for my questions. They did not drift away in their discussions and ``war stories'' but always returned to my questions. This was a completely new experience for me. Thank you, Carsten, Heiko, Joachim and Hartwig! Now as I was prepared, I did my first edits today. :-) At first, however, I wasn't able to create an account because my email address was already used. I had to realize that I already have an account since 2008-06-29, but never edited anything. My first edit was moving a mill museum I know to the right build- ing. [0] (A quick apprentice piece.) Then, I did what I really wanted to do: Add the Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, which was a multipolygon ... ;-) [1] The OSM guys in Stuttgart helped me to improve my first steps. After querying him, the original author of the suspicious way near the lake Mueritz deleted it, as being a mistake. Great. Great.
