2013-11-23 In my 2013-11-20 text, I've asked several times ``How would you have done that on Windows?'' Boris critizized, that I would slander against Windows. That I wouldn't have enough Windows knowledge for a qualified judgement. Because, in the Powershell `cat * > all' would be equally possible. (`cat' being an alias for `Get-Content'.) He is right that I do have ignored the Powershell. That was a fault. But still, I think, that my reference to Windows was no slander- ing. My question was directed to Windows users. I wonder how many of them could have came up with such an approach. Whereas on Unix, most of the users would have known such commands. No, better: the target users! On Unix, the target users are expected to learn its powerful concepts, in order to use the computer in a more powerful way. On Windows, the users are assumed to remain dumb. They are offered the comfort of not having to learn things, but at the same time they are kept from using their com- puter in powerful ways. I didn't wanted to say, that such powerful commands are not pos- sible on Windows, but they are not encouraged and thus, typical users have no clue about it. Further more, and this is something Boris brought up as well, Windows lacks the extensive supporting eco system, that multi- plies the power of each of the tools. In Unix, unfortunately, with the mass entering of users that fol- low the (Windows) approach of not having to learn about the sys- tem they use, the virtue of Unix' concepts wears away, as well. (Remember that we need simple systems with clear concepts in ord- er to be able to understand them. If we choose to make the sys- tems complex, all roads must lead to surrender.) http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
