2013-01-11 Today, Clemens Tubach explained i3v, an integrated library system (ILS) to me. The system was developed by GINIT and Karlsruhe University. GINIT created the framework, the university library set the library system on top. Later GINIT died. The university, known as KIT today, still uses the system and maintains it. Most other users have moved away and the KIT itself will do that too, eventually. This is sad. What I've heard about i3v is impressive. In my opinion, the system has a great design: It is self- supporting! Yes, you develop this library system using the li- brary system itself. This is the first system of that kind with this property I have heard of. To create new dialogs, database tables, and things like that, you simply use tools included in i3v. There is no need for off-system development. They have done it right. Sad to see that i3v has lost the race. Much poorer sys- tems, in terms of usability and even more in terms of design, have much larger market shares. -- This is business. :-( http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
