2012-05-16 I started to use the hjkl-Keys quickly after I had switched to vi in 2006/2007. As a touch-typer with Escape mapped on Caps Lock this increased my editing speed. However, I always wondered why they had chosen hjkl back then and not jkli (or sdfe). The latter alternatives appeared more natural to me. Back then, my gaming background was quite fresh. When playing computer games, the up key often means going forward, and down means slowing down or go- ing backward. These two action are likey disjunct, thus making sense to control them with one finger while having separate fingers for left and right. This was the model I was thinking back then. Today, I know that it's better to have hjkl than to have jkli. The reason is that in editing or scrolling, the up (k) and down (j) keys are the most important ones. Hence, it's worthwhile to have them under the strongest fingers and both directly available. http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
