2012-01-11 Think before you do! I have kernel panics every now and then. On the Crux mailing list, possible solutions were proposed. One of them was using an old ATA driver, instead of the current one. This meant recompil- ing the Linux, the kernel. I did this and installed it, but *without* ensuring to be able to boot the old kernel image in case of problems. A few minutes later, I had a system that wouldn't boot. Perfect! I tried to activate the boot loader (lilo) menu, to be able to choose the old image. Therefore I used a DSL live CD, which had lilo, but couldn't chroot to my system because the kernel was too old, and a SliTaz live CD, which could chroot, but had no lilo. Step by step, I came closer. Unfortunately, installing a new boot loader didn't solve the issue. It took some time until I came to the idea to simply recompile the kernel, like it had been before. I did this with a Crux ins- tallation CD, which I used only for booting its kernel. Unfor- tunately, my boot loader work had introduced new problems (``L 99 99 99 ...''), which were the problem to solve then. Eventually, I was able to fix them ... who knows how. ;-) (Reins- talling the MBR and the boot loader and whatever.) But the les- son is learned: Be able to select an alternative and working ker- nel if you recompile yours. http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
