2011-09-15 Why don't people use group replies? One person sends a question mail to several recipients. Those of them who answer write back only to the sender. Hence the others won't know if someone answered already. That's why the meaning of mail header lines should be tought. And MUAs should do ``the right thing'' by default. Related is the problem, that mail users seldom examine the mail header, not even the part that is displayed in their MUA. They forward messages to persons who were already CCd on the original message. Today I didn't take a spreadsheet program, but used tbl and troff instead. I needed to create a match schedule for a tournament (22 teams, 2 classes, 3 fields, 60 matches). The task was challeng- ing. I did need a lot of time, but of course, it was the first time I did such work with these tools. The result looks quite nice. What I missed during preparation and for reuse of the result is the value transfer of speadsheets, where you enter some value at some place and it appears automatically at other places too. I could achieve this by having the tbl/troff code as a tem- plate and a, say awk, script to fill in the variable values for some plain text data base. Yes, I should implement this to have it ready the next time. We do use Latex and troff for large documents, but keep using of- fice suites for the daily writes. Why? We should use the cool tools daily. Latex has the problem that it needs the preamble overhead. It's pretty clear that Latex is designed for large do- cuments. Plain Tex, which I sadly hardly know, might be dif- ferent. Troff at least is clearly suited for small, one-page do- cuments. I definately should enforce me to use it regularly. http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
