A second problem appeared. This one had been  more  difficult  to
solve.

One account on the system used /usr/bin/startx as login shell  in
order  to  have  a  text  login but then fire up X automatically.
With the Etch to Lenny transition  this  setup  stopped  working.
The  window  manager started but it wasn't possible to create any
clients, and those clients I created in xinitrc appeared only for
a second but died then.

The problem had been identifying the source of the problem.  Long
time I thought it would be fluxbox's fault.

Now I force the user to type `x' (is a shortcut to `startx') into
the  shell after logging in. Not as nice but acceptable. Probably
good enough.
