Upgraded a Debian system from Etch to Lenny.   (The  machine  has
few  power,  thus  I tend to stay a bit behind.)  I had to manage
few free disk space and a small internet bandwidth.  But the real
problem had been:

     E: Internal Error, Could not perform  immediate  confi-
     guration (1) on debconf

Luckily, the community provided the solution:

     dpkg -i --force-confnew --force-depends \
     /var/cache/apt/archives/debconf_1.5.24_all.deb
