The handy word boundery anchors `\<' and `\>' are available  e.g.
in the BREs of ed(1) and in GNU tools but they are not POSIX.

Interval expressions like `{n,m}' are POSIX but not available  in
traditional egrep/awk.


The sources for such information are rare and it's  difficult  to
separate historic facts from standardization efforts and from new
or extended implementations of old tools.
