2011-04-05 After lots of time with little computer use I'm coming back to it now. This is a summary of what I is going on these days. On my notebook Debian sid is still in the same shape as it had been before I left in August. That means, it is terribly outdat- ed. Yet I haven't started to run an upgrade and probably I won't do it. The reason are DMA errors I receive infrequently. They started to appear two years ago. Since then I get them every cou- ple of months. The hard disk drive starts to issue some clicker- ing sound and refuses to work afterwards in most cases. Only a hard restart helps. I'm not sure if the problem originates in the disk or on the mainboard or even in software. Most likely it's the disk .... but maybe I only want the disk to be the prob- lem and not the mainboard. However, I think I'll try a new disk and see what happens. The current one is five years old anyway. While doing this change I will switch from Debian sid to CRUX in the same go. I'm really looking forward to giving CRUX a try. Maybe that puts a temporary end to my search for the ``perfect'' Unix system for me. Well, it's still based on Linux, but besides that it seems to be really nice. Also, it's quite small and strives for simplici- ty. And finally, Juergen Daubert, who is also involved in masqmail, is a core developer. The NetBSD 4.0 installation on my workstation at home never be- came really familiar to me. I must admit I never digged deep enough into the package and port system. I could use it good enough as any other Unix system I work on, although it had been a bit unstable in some cases. I enjoyed having a non-Linux system at home, and this I'll miss, but currently I doubt if NetBSD really is what I search for ... Hence I plan to put Debian sid on this machine. (For Debian packaging I like to have one Debian sid system somewhere.) Then the topic webspace and server. During the last year or so I realized that my webspace doesn't suffice anymore. My wishes grew with my abilities over the years. Currently things are split between my webspace, my server at home and deifl's server (I'm happy to have an account there). I plan to exchange my webspace for a vserver ... but haven't decided yet. It's time for change, apparently. http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
