2010-11-30 I had been some days offline. During this time it happened that the importance of all that computer stuff decreased from my per- sonal view. This will surely not last too long but currently it makes me unproductive regarding computer stuff. The difficulties I have with nmh's community add to this. Hence, I'm doing this and that but not much and not with much aim these days. Now some random bits: For a website I maintain I added a script that incorporates external HTML content and transforms it into a suitable form. Therefore I use PHP's preg_replace(). How much trouble would I have had without knowing regular expressions. I had been pointed to gource [0] which generates nice visualisa- tions of VCS repo logs. It's more a toy to play with, but worth a try. In vi I much too often use `dd......' or count lines instead of using a nifty ex command like `:.,/foo/d'. Its the same as using the mouse instead of a command line. That's why I want to change my habits here. Currently I try to use `;' more often, which is a handy key on the american layout. I don't like that the movements are less predictable than with `w'. With `G' I'm doing quite well. `(' and `)' are a bit annoying as they require double-spacing of sentences. I would use them more often otherwise. Brasero is a nice CD and DVD writing program. Usually I use genisofs/growisofs and wodim directly but anyway. In contrast to k3b brasero is much simpler -- it just works. Distributed VCS are great and one really should use them. Clone and commit often. Why not clone 10 copies and implement each feature in one, one may merge the copies afterwards. Branches I don't like as they add complexity to using the VCS. If only the basic features are used then basic knowledge of the VCS software is sufficient and the concrete programs are nearly interchange- able which is good. Cool features create dependencies and barri- eres. I really should release a new version of masqmail soon, at least before I'm offline again. But in the end it's just implementing any of the many plans I have. Unfortunately, these days I'm not in the mood. :-( [0] http://code.google.com/p/gource/ http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
