I should have known: The shell construct ~user/ is not portable.


Finally started to use Neil Rickert's MH scripts.   [0]  Why  not
earlier?   They make handling of signed and encyrpted mails in MH
really easy.


Gunnar Ritter now has applied my patch which fixes the -x flag in
Heirloom col.  [1] Great!
