2010-06-17 I had an interesting discussion with Toni Mueller at MiniDebconf about text editors in the console for novices. (Advanced users (should) use vi or emacs of course.) I am dissatisfied with nano (the common choice) and was looking for alternatives. He argued that vi (or better: vim) would be well suited for novices too. They only would need to understand the modal interface. First I completely blocked his arguments, so strong was my belief that vi would be too complex, but he convinced me. Today I shaped a subset of vi which a novice would need to learn to be able to work with vi. It covers what novices usually do with nano. The explanations fitted onto one page (which I creat- ed with troff and pic). [0] [0] http://marmaro.de/docs/vi-for-nano-users/ http://marmaro.de/lue/ markus schnalke
