2022-02-09 Winter Disc Golf A few days ago and today I've been to the disc golf course in Soehnstetten, for the first time disc golfing since October. Last week it had 7C, rather noticable west wind and soft snow on the steep hills of the course. Today it had 10C, it was sunny, no wind at all, but frozen snow. The conditions were pretty dif- ferent. Last week: I played with only a DX Roc3 and my P3 putter, making all drives with the Roc3. I cannot reach some pins with the Roc3, but par should be no problem on every hole. I started well with seven straight pars. Then on #8, an easy 100m hole, I had a 13m birdie putt, that I missed. It rolled a bit, then I missed the 8m putt. And then I also missed the 5m putt. From birdie chance to double bogey. :-( The rest of the holes were alternating bogey, par. On #11 I threw OB. On #13 my thumber approach rolled down the hill. On #15 I threw too low into the hillside. On #17 it had raging headwind, which I couldn't handle. At least I made both mandos, but it was a fight for the double bogey. Eventually I finished +7 (=61) with 0 birdies, 13 pars, 3 bogeys, and 2 double bogeys. There was no single problem, rather lacking a bit in every as- pect. Without the OB and the two double bogey holes it could have been a +3 and thus a good round for playing with the Roc3, which is no driver and I don't use it that often. Today: This time I played with only a DX Eagle (my orange one) and my P3 putter. #1: I threw the P3 backhand straight at the pin, which was a quite good choice. However, it was more stable than I thought, not flipping up as much as I expected. Thus it landed pin-high left. From there it took me three more throws to get the putter in. -> 4 #2: Eagle forehand, and a 9m putt for birdie! :-) -> 2 #3: Eagle backhand, a good drive, hit the stairs halfway up, but then rolled back down the slope. -> 3 #4: Eagle backhand. P3 thumber approach, slid forth and back on the frozen ground, but fortunately settled 3m from the pin. -> 3 #5: Eagle backhand. Approach. 3m putt. -> 3 #6: Eagle forehand hyzer, looked quite good, but I couldn't find my disc. After a long search I found it all down of the hill! It must have rolled all those 200m. I decided to re-throw. The same throw but this time resting where it hit. Layup and putt. -> 5 #7: Eagle backhand ... it looked way too far ... but then it was just perfekt! Parked! Wow! :-) -> 2 #8: Eagle backhand. Hit the band from 7m. -> 3 #9: Eagle backhand, good drive. Putt from 8m to the elevated pin ... and made it! :-) -> 2 #10: Eagle backhand, hit a bit left, then rolled down to the path. Approach into the frozen snowy ground, it hit by the pin then slid down to 12m. But, well, ... I made the putt! :-D -> 3 #11: P3 backhand, early release, tracking OB but fortunately hit a bush and kicked back in. -> 3 #12: Eagle backhand, short left. Layup, which slid past the pin. (I should have hit on the snow before the pin and slide the disc into the grass under then pin, than hit the grass and skip into the snow past the pin and slide.) Unfortunately I missed the putt from 4m. -> 4 #13: Eagle backhand, good drive, landing in the lift track. Good layup from 10m into the hard frozen snowy hillside. -> 3 #14: Eagle backhand. Had a 5m putt, for which I cannot say if I made it, because the pins from holes #6, #14 and #15 are current- ly removed. Thus I only estimated those putts. Here I'd say it's 50:50, thus: -> 2.5 #15: Eagle backhand, pin-high but way right. Here the snow was frozen and the hill steep, as well. I tried to lay up from 20m but of course slid as well. The putt from 5m would have been a 50:50 as well. -> 3.5 #16: Eagle backhand, good. 12m layup ... hit by the pin but then slid 25m (!) down the hill. Layup, which fortunately rested. But I missed the putt from 5m. -> 5 #17: Eagle backhand, well placed. Missed from 9m. Made the come- backer from 8m! -> 3 #18: Eagle backhand, landed just a bit left of the big tree. I just had an open look, only slightly blocked on the right. Made the 8m putt! -> 2 This makes +2 (=56). What a good round! :-) The putting was phenomenal! Well, two short misses, but also makes from 9m, 8m elevated, 12m, 8m and 8m! This is not what I usually expect to make. I also had good drives: On #3 to the stairs (the more understable driver helped a lot there). Parking #7! #8 for a birdie putt. #9 good enough as well. #14 and #16 to makable putts. Interestingly I did not really miss my Zone, which usually is a very important disc for me on this course. I could replace the drives with the Eagle and P3 quite well. Also, the P3 did pretty well for drives in general. That might be a good choice for the future as well, as it lands much flatter than the more overstable Zone. If I substract the bad slide on #16 and what proabably had been a long slide on #6, both caused by the snow condition, then this could have as well been a -2! Hence I am fully happy with this round. (Although some other people played on the course, no single one of them went to play the holes in the valley. The snow on the teepads was all virgin. I seemed to be the only one who plays the same in winter and in summer.) I might use this orange Eagle more frequently this year ... http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
