2021-04-28 Almost the Same Again a round at Soehnstetten. This time a bit warmer, a bit lower wind and from almost the opposite direction (south-east). Instead of P3-Zone-MOLF, I played with P3-Zone-Valk, only having exchanged the straight driver. My score, at even (=54), was one worse than last time, but it was more consistent with 14 pars, 2 birdies and 2 bogeys. The holes: #1: Zone backhand, this time, with the opposite wind, I should have thrown the same shot as last time, but instead I threw what I should have thrown last time. %-) The P3 jumper layup went far beyond the basket. -> 4 #2: Zone forehand, a bit short. Layup. -> 3 #3: Good Valk backhand drive, landing near the left side of the ladder. With a bit more height I might have reached the plat- form. Long missputt. -> 3 #4: Again not wide enough, catching the branches on the left. I not even had a putt. Made the 7m putt after a mediocre layup. -> 3 #5: Valk backhand, a pretty good drive, lifted a bit into the headwind and thus faded down left, but overall a good result. Zone backhand approach into the hill. 6m putt. -> 3 #6: Zone forehand, this time with more power. It landed pin-high right. Missed the 8m putt. -> 3 #7: Zone backhand, a bit high, but caught the tree behind the basket. There it dropped down. Only about 8m from the pin but without a look. I went with a P3 scoober over bushes and stuff ... almost hit metal. From the short rollaway I made the 6m putt. -> 3 #8: Valkyrie backhand, a nice throw, just a bit short. Another 8m putt that I missed. -> 3 #9: Valkyrie backhand with a bit too much turn. Landed right of the pin ... but better there than in the scrubs on the left! Missed the 18m putt. -> 3 #10: A great Valkyrie backhand drive, only it was a bit too low (plus the air seems to drop down over the tunnel area). Ap- proached with a P3 thumber. 4m putt. -> 3 #11: Zone forehand, lacking power and thus distance. Missed another 8m putt. -> 3 #12: This time I threw the Zone backhand on a hyzer ... and put it 5m from the pin! It was a death putt, but I made it. :-) -> 2 #13: Following up with a great Valkyrie backhand drive, which even rolled a bit closer to the pin, coming to rest at the branches of the big tree nearest to the pin. This must have been my best drive on that hole yet. I'm glad I made the 4m putt! ;-) -> 2 #14: Valk backhand a bit left. P3 14m layup upside-down. Drop-in. -> 3 #15: Valk backhand. Missed the 10m putt. -> 3 #16: Valk backhand, a good drive but a bit right. (I should try to get a bit more left on that hole for a better angle to the pin and less risk on the putt.) Missed the 9m putt ... and was faced with a 6m comebacker. Fortunately I made that. -> 3 (At this point I was at -1 for the round. To tie my PB of -2 I would have needed to go par #17 and birdie #18.) #17: Valkyrie backhand big anny. I didn't get it over enough, also it was a bit too high, thus landing short and left. Not the worst spot ... but if you throw horrible upshots then you need better drives. ;-) I went with a P3 thumber, which had worked well for me previously. I don't know why it happened, but the result was that it made it not even halfway to the pin and got stuck obstructed by some structure. What a horrible approach! Yes, and then I had a 12m putt with a lot of wind! ... to save the much needed par. My putting effort wasn't bad, but the chances were low already. -> 4 #18: Went with the Zone, full power, hoping to reach the pin. Unfortunately I came in a bit too high, clipping the twigs and dropping down. From 14m I caught some chaings but dropped out. (With an additional practice throw after the round I even out- drove the pin with the Zone on a low line, only I went too far right. There's a lot more distance potential in my lower body!) -> 3 As already said, I came in at even par (=54). The problem were all those almost birdies. Too many putts from 8m instead of 5m. That's where the difference comes from. Valkyrie instead of MOLF wasn't a problem. On some holes (e.g. #4, #17) the MOLF feels to be the better disc, on others (e.g. #3, #10) I like the Valkyrie more. There isn't much difference between these two drivers on the Soehnstetten course. Probably, playing with any one of them still would be better than switching between them in the same round. On #14 neither of them really fits well. That's the hole I like the Teebird most, but I wouldn't want to carry it for only a sin- gle hole. Or maybe I only need to open my mind for going more right. It isn't too bad there. Maybe that's only a mental prob- lem. Overall I'm on the right track. Simply do the same more often and the results will show up. The biggest problem hole still is #1, which I haven't birdied a single time, yet. Currently I'm trying the Zone/Roc3 long anny line, but I either turn over and go long or right, or fade out early left. Maybe I should try a forehand hyzer, hanging it wide, skipping far enough from the pin to not risk skipping past it. I have to think more about that and try some different lines there (thumber?). http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
