2021-02-04 New PB After Winter Break The first time discgolfing this year! After the snow has melted and the temperatures are no longer freezing, I went to the Wiley course for the first rounds of the year. At around 10C, hardly any wind, and the sun shining, it was perfect disc golf weather ... and I shot a new highscore. :-) I had four discs with me: D P3 (the black lined), DX Roc3, DX Banshee, and an ESP Comet. The Comet was for some smooth throws on this calm day. The other three discs are my current winter Wi- ley bag. The first round I played Comet vs. Banshee. The Roc3 remained in the hand. I putted with the P3 from both drives. The Comet scored at +2 -- a short missed putt, a bad upshot, a bogey on #9 ... but as well a drive on an ace line on #7! Just 1m left of the pin, otherwise fine on height and speed. I made the putt from 7m long for the only birdie of the Comet round. The Banshee came in at even. A birdie on #5 with a P3 backhand drive, and a missputt bogey on #6. The I was asked by Dieter to join him. Thus we played the next two rounds together (keeping distance). I played with all three discs then (BA, R3, P3): #1: X-step Banshee backhand drive. -> 3 #2: Roc3 backhand. -> 2 #3: Banshee backhand low hyzer. Missed the 10m putt. -> 3 #4: Roc3 forehand. -> 2 #5: P3 backhand ... and missed the 3m (!) putt! :-( -> 3 #6: Banshee forehand. Made an 8m putt. -> 2 #7: Roc3 forehand. -> 3 #8: Roc3 backhand hyzer. -> 2 #9: X-step Banshee backhand drive. -> 3 4 birdies, no bogeys ... and there's the new personal best: -4 (=23) (... which could easily have been one more stroke better!) It's been so easy! Part of the success was the relaxed time I had with Dieter. The next round started equally well: par, birdie, par, birdie, drop-in birdie, par, drop-in birdie ... but then, sitting four under ... I shanked the drive on #8, took it tight, hit a tree, dropped down. The approach/lay-up/half-run wasn't bad, it even had a chance to go in, but it curled behind the tree next to the pin. From there I had a 4m straddle anny putt ... which I left a bit too low. How unfortunate! Probably this bogey lead to some frustration, which resulted in lack of focus. I threw the X-step Banshee drive on #9 way high into the air, landing very short. %-| Roc3 forehand again short. Obstructed long look sailed past. Missed the comebacker. Double-bogey. Two holes to ruin the PB- pace round. Overall I was playing very smooth. The drives on #5 were all fine, just the smoothest throws towards the pin. The Comet drive on #7 was so smooth (and on an ace line). My forehand form was a bit rough today, but still, I got four of the ten birdies today after forehand drives. The Roc3 really did the work. Six of the ten birdies were after Roc3 drives! (The others: 2 P3, 1 BA, 1 Co.) The Roc3 was an im- provement on this course since right when I've put it in my bag (after having bought it only to save the shipping price!). Generally I've become much better in the last half year. I've im- proved my score at Soehnstetten and at the Wiley course. Birdies are much more frequent now. This is an improvement that has noth- ing to do with distance (although I gained a bit of distance as well, through the X-step). It's mainly confident play, avoiding mistakes and better putting. Maybe a consequence of this improvement is the growing of my bag. Suddenly two midranges (Roc3, Comet) are trying to make the bag. The MOLF is trying to be the backup driver. The Banshee covers the ES Teebird slot so well in wet weather. Partly I'm glad I don't have to play a tournament currently, as I would struggle to decide what discs to bag. The workhorse vs. specialist distinc- tion still exists, which is good. The Roc3 is the one new disc that tries to get a workhorse slot, increasing them from four to five. Still I like to throw few discs in one round. The set rath- er changes from course to course, from round to round, also based on weather conditions. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
