2020-11-15 Soehnstetten Under Par Finally! What a round! Unbelievable! :-) After some time off ... after having played a lot (i.e. much more than usual) with my normal bag ... I took the opportunity to play on this sunny and warm day, maybe one of the last this year. I can't tell why exactly, but I decided to play a quick discs-in- the-hand round after such a long time playing with the normal bag. Going lightweight, yay! :-) ... and you know what? It turned out great! :-D I scored a new personal best, shooting one under par for the first time in Soehnstetten! I did have a handful of really good rounds there in recent times, but each of them had too many bogeys to complement the birdies. Today's round was rather bor- ing: Full of pars. ;-) Two birdies and one bogey. But, here's the secret: Avoiding bogeys improves your scores the most. It was good that the course was so crowded, because that kept my thoughts busy without distracting my game. I was kinda in the flow: focussed but as well full of light thoughts. Only later, I realized how good the round was, also there were no flights be- fore me anymore ... and, boom, the bogey hit. ;-) Let's run through the holes: 1) Teebird backhand anny, not enough anny (the typical problem), landing short left. Great Zone backhand approach, curling under the basket. Drop-in. -> 3 2) Teebird forehand, a bit short. 15m half-run (because of danger behind). 3m putt. -> 3 3) Teebird backhand, the typical problem: short left. (I need to challenge the right side more!) Great Zone flick through the big trees! 4m putt. -> 3 4) Teebird backhand, a good throw, I just cannot get the same distance as with the Valk or OLF. 20m P3 approach (patent pend- ing). 3m putt. -> 3 5) Teebird forehand, turned over, because of the headwind, which I did not take into account enough, but no bad failure. 30m Zone backhand approach ... and it hit the bottom of the pole! :-) 4m putt. -> 4 6) Zone forehand, perfect! 4m putt. Birdie! :-) -> 2 7) Zone backhand, a bit short. 15m P3 layup downhill over the bushes. 3m putt, straddled out from the tree. -> 3 8) Teebird backhand, again not taking the headwind enough into account, turned over but came back a bit, landing pin-high right. 25m Zone forehand approach. 4m putt. -> 3 9) Teebird backhand anny, a bit high or not enough anny, landing short. 15m putt missed. 3m putt. -> 3 10) Teebird backhand, okay drive, just not the Valk/OLF distance. 20m Zone forehand approach. 3m putt. -> 3 11) Zone forehand, perfect. 3m putt. -> 2 12) Teebird backhand, not high enough, thus going a bit long. 8m half-run. 2m putt. -> 3 13) Teebird backhand, short left. (I was thinking too much right before the drive. I feared going right. I should have resettled first and then thrown with a confimed decision.) Difficult 25m approach, over bushes and on an away sloping green, not too bad. Unfortunately the 6m putt chained out right side. Drop-in. -> 4 14) Teebird backhand, a bit right, thus going down into the ditch. The 8m putt was a good one, unfortunately it chained out as well. Drop-in. -> 3 15) Teebird backhand, a bit short left. 9m putt missed low, not the worst, as everything is very uphill and not rolling away is key. 2m putt. -> 3 16) Teebird backhand, too low, thus short, (but this hole doesn't shape for the TB anyways, Valk and OLF provide much more distance here). 20m putt missed short. 3m putt. -> 3 17) Teebird forehand, (a bit shorter than my usual Felon drives, but still just up the slope and positioned right, as it should be). 25m Zone backhand hyzer approach, sat and stuck. 4m putt. -> 3 18) Teebird backhand, too high, catching the twigs, dropping down ... with the fat tree right between me and the pin. With a strad- dle I could just see the pin. The 12m hyzer putt wasn't bad, but still missed. Drop-in. -> 3 One bogey, two birdies, makes -1 (=53). Drives: On #3, #4, #10 and #16 the Valkyrie would have provided opportun- ities that the Teebird just could not offer. On #18 the Comet would have been a better driver, probably. But overall the Tee- bird could manage it all. Having the Zone for #6, #7 and #11 was much more useful than having the Valk for the other holes (be- sides having the Zone for the approaches, of course!). Approaches: They were key today. The approach game was on point. So many short putts! Almost no 5-8m putts. Putting: These were the putts I made: - 4 drop-ins - 2 from 2m putts - 7 from 3m putts - 5 from 4m putts These were the putts I missed: - 1 chain-out from 6m - 1 from 9m - 1 chain-out from 10m - 1 from 12m - 2 from 15m - 1 from 20m (Only the first three would I consider realistically makeable.) These are the half-runs and layups (excluding approach throws): - 1 from 15m - 1 from 20m - 1 from 25m My putting was neither really good nor bad; it just lacked the difficult 6-8m range -- the ones you like to make but you know you have only 50% or less probability on them. Not having these putts relaxes the mind. :-) Overall the round was great. I've been a lot in a flow-like state. I enjoyed playing. Going lightweight and having so much success with it was great! The three discs I've played with are so essential to my bag! The Valkyrie does add substancially to them. But Felon, Comet and OLF are specialty discs only. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
