2020-10-03 Safari Doubles with Marius Today I played the Safari Doubles tournament at Ehningen, [0] to- gether with Marius. For him it was his first tournament, after having played disc golf for about five or six times. The format was ``Best Shot'' in the morning and ``Best Shot Putt Confirmed'' in the afternoon. I am satisfied with how we played. Marius pro- vided a good part to our play. I am happy about that. A tour through the holes: 1) Like the normal hole 1 but from the right side of the tree row. First round I threw the MOLF, a bit high (because of bushes in front of the tee). It faded left into the trees, getting stuck 4m high. We still used my drive because Marius was tucked on the right side behind a bush with his Buzzz. Our approach was too far right to make the putt. -> 4. Second round I threw the Valk for less fade, but got about the same result. Marius went with his Roadrunner, landing more straight. We went with his drive and managed the par (both putting from about 4m). -> 3. 2) Through a tree tunnel into the open. It was lightly right turning through the tunnel, then straight ahead to 16's pin. First round Marius missed the mando, but I made the gap with the Felon forehand. Open approach, par. -> 3. Second round my Felon forehand hit some tree, remaining in the bushes. Marius made it through the leaves with his Roadrunner. The approach was not good enough for two short putts. -> 4. 3) I went with the Valkyrie both rounds, on a slight hyzer, clearing the woods, landing in the open, at about 20m to the pin. We couldn't make the puts but had easy pars. -> 3. -> 3. Marius had one good RR drive almost as good as mine, the other he hit straight into the bushes. 4) The regular hole 3. Marius went first both times, putting the Roadrunner behind the middle-fairway trees. This gave me green light for Valkyrie annies. Both rounds they worked out well. First round fading a bit left at the end; second round landing perfectly in the fairway (for the distance I can expect). Two pars. -> 3. -> 3. 5) The typical CTP hole 3b, with an OB line close behind the pin. First round I went with the Zone, catching the twigs right. Marius had the same problem with his Buzzz. My approach was bare- ly (!) in bounds. We made that putt. -> 3. Second round he went right behind the trees. I had a not so bad throw with the P3, but it was too high, fading left at the very end, deep into the left bushes. We went from my lie but couldn't place it close. -> 4. 6) The hole 3c. It's a long slightly right turning fairway with several masts and single trees. First round I failed horribly on this hole, letting Marius do all the work. My Felon forehand straight in a tree. My approach straight into the bushes. We got a bogey. -> 4. Second round my Valk backhand faded left, away from the pin. On this hole I wished to have a Comet, or anything slower and slightly understable. I don't have anything like that in my bag. (Maybe, with touch, I could have thrown the Valk fore- hand as an alternative.) We lacked lines to the pin. -> 4. This hole we did not play well at all. 7) Even worse this hole. From the electric tower straight, up the hill, then a hard right turn and to hole 8's basket. Did we ever put a disc on the fairway? Marius went left into the bushes both round. I went right with my Felon forehands. It was the wrong disc and line choice. It could not have worked. I should have thrown backhands, with the Valk probably ... or a putter place- ment shot. Going from thick scrubs to thick scrubs we managed to put the disc into the basket, eventually. -> 5. -> 5. 8) From hole 9's tee to hole 15's pin. Our drives were exactly the same both rounds. Marius went with a high Roadrunner drive, fading left towards the road, where he opened the forehand hyzer over OB to the pin. I went with the Valk, throwing two beautiful backhand throws (probably my best of the tournament), landing straight ahead, uphill of the pin. First round we went with Marius's drive. His forehand came back in bounds, just a bit short. My forehand stayed OB. Without a window for the putt, we had to take the bogey. -> 4. Second round my drive was very good. I layed up under the pin, he went for it, just not able to con- vert from 18m. -> 3. 9) From some hole's pin backwards to behind the big bush near hole 14's teepad. First round I missed the mando but Marius land- ing safe after an accidental cut roller. Our approaches both were a bit too short. -> 4. Second round, my Valkyrie drive was as good as I could expect it. This time the approaches were good. -> 3 10) From near hole 11's pin over hole 10's pin into the next fairway. Marius tried to hit the straight tunnel both rounds but failed. I went with long Valkyrie annies. First round I caught the widest tree. From there Marius went with a high stall-out Buzzz shot, I went with a Teebird thumber. Still in the scrubs we had to lay up. -> 4. Second round the drive went around the last tree, giving us a hyzer line to the pin. Marius's throw was okay, mine provided us with a short putt (which was important because we had to confirm it). (This was our finishing hole.) -> 3. 11) From below hole 9's basket to hole 6's basket: Straight, then bend left to a pin in the trees on the right. First round we Marius missed the mando (IIRC), I went into the bushes at the corner. We threw forehands from there. Still outside the trees, Marius tried his luck with a low straight shot, I tried a fore- hand roller (which was all bad). From Marius's lie we tried to run it, but with low probabilities. -> 4. The second round I can- not recall, only that we scored a double bogey after I missed to confirm the 4m putt. :-( -> 5. 12) Heavily wooded, from near hole 6's pin to hole 5's pin. First round I tried to throw an anny with my P3 but hit the first tree. We took Marius' drive, which also hit trees but went farth- er, to save the par. -> 3. Second round I threw the P3 straight, which worked out well. My drive was a bit closer than Marius'. Another par. -> 3. 13) From the edge of hole 6's wood to hole 4's pin. In both rounds we took Marius' drives. First round I pulled my Zone back- hand into the scrubs on the right. Second round my Felon forehand didn't fight back enough to the right side of the gap. Marius played well both rounds, first with the Buzzz then with the Roadrunner. Approaches and putts were solid. -> 3. -> 3. 14) A very short island hole to hole 18's pin. My drives landed outside both rounds. Marius placed one close for birdie in round one. -> 2. This was our only birdie all day. Second round he went OB as well. We couldn't make it from the 10.5m drop zone. -> 4. 15) A putter station: Make the putt from 20m for a 1. If not, make the putt from 9.50m for a 2. If not, make the putt from 5m for a 3. If not, score a 4. We scored 3s both rounds. -> 3. -> 3. Our scores were 52 and 54. As each one of us missed one short putt for confirmation in round two, both rounds were pretty much the same. There was a slight improvement in round two I'd say. Also the weather was getting better in the afternoon. No more rain but nice sun and blue sky. Nonetheless, our feet were wet and overall we were a bit cold. The official results list a total score of 108 (instead of 106, which I calculated; I don't know why). The 108 placed us tied for 12th out of 14 in Open, and tied for 20th out of 29 overall. (With the 106 we would have been 10th/18th, respectively.) Marius played with two Pures for putting, a Z-Flx Buzzz and a Champion Roadrunner. I think that this setup works fine for him. I played with my normal bag: - D P3 (2) - JB Zone - ES TB - S VL - M OLF - L Felon My main driver clearly was the Valkyrie. It worked very well to- day. I used the MOLF for some shots in the beginning, but did no longer use it later, because the Valkyrie did perform so well, and there were no lines I expected the MOLF to provide an advan- tage. Did I ever drive with the Teebird, except for the short forehand on #14? I don't think so. The lines did not ask for Tee- bird drives. I did use it for approach shots several times, though. For the forehand drives I usually took the Felon. In warmer weather, with better grip and smoother form, the TB and VL would have provided better forehand lines. Zone and P3 were as usual. I did miss a Comet in the bag. Maybe I should return bagging one ...
