2020-09-06 Soehnstetten MOLF Today a round in Soehnstetten. I played with the new MOLF as my only driver. Furthermore I had my JB Zone and the P3. Practically a three disc round, thus. (Actually I did carry another P3 plus the Star Valkyrie for some practice throws. And I had cloths and water with me, thus carrying a bag.) The goal was getting more used to the MOLF. Although some shots were still missing (like a big anny), the drives were more diverse than the field practice recently. At 18C, clowdy sky, and NW wind, there were more people on the course than I expected. After being slowed down by a newbies group, we met another guy playing alone, with his girl-friend walking with him. We joined for the rest of the round. This was nice, on the one hand, because socializing has something nice to it, but, on the other hand, my scores usually drop if I play and talk with others. The same this time. After a great start, I scored my first bogey of the round the hole we joined, then had some more bad holes, before I could find back to myself towards the end of the round, when I scored well again. 1) Low straight MOLF throw, settling 5m to the pin! Then I failed on the 5m birdie putt! :-( Made the 3m comebacker. -> 3 2) Forehand MOLF, a bit long left. Made the 8m putt! Birdie! -> 2 3) MOLF backhand, too much hyzer ... as always -- damn! I need to remember that the uphill throw makes discs fly more overstable. The drive was far, nontheless. Had a Zone hyzer around the left side of the tree. Made the 6m putt. -> 3 4) MOLF backhand, a bit too left, but it still penetrated forward after flying through leaves. Missed the 13m putt. Made the 3m putt. -> 3 5) MOLF backhand, couldn't get it over, thus it flew straight- to-fade, which is not the best on this hole, though not the worst either. Bad 25m uphill forehand Zone approach, landing on the upslope left. Missed the 8m downhill putt. Drop-in. -> 4 6) Zone forehand, a bit long. Missed the 8m putt. Made the 3m comebacker. -> 3 7) Zone backhand, which flew straight. I need to remember that I have to throw it with hyzer, because on the downhill flight the JB Zone doesn't fade much. Then a bad 18m Zone approach, landing in the big tree. Left was a 5m putt but so obstucted that a scoober window was all I had ... missed the putt. Drop-in. -> 4 8) MOLF backhand, left. 20m jumper. Drop-in. -> 3 9) MOLF backhand, again left. 15m hyzer putt around the scrubs. 3m putt. ->3 10) MOLF backhand, ... you guess it: left. It rolled down the whole slope. Zone forehand, landing a bit left. Missed the 8m putt. Made the 3m comebacker. -> 4 (The practice drive with the Star Valk was perfect, i.e. as good as I can expect it: straight, landing on the path, 10m from the pin. That's a 90m drive with perfect direction. I cannot ask for more.) 11) Zone forehand, a bit short left. Missed the 8m putt. Drop-in. -> 3 12) MOLF backhand hyzer, landing a bit left of the pin. I was faced with a 5m death putt. Taken by unnecessary fear, I missed it and it rolled. Then I missed the 6m comebacker. Then I made the 5m comebacker ... so easy. Man! That was unnecessary! Just chip it in! All the worry only made it worse. Use a push putt and chip it in easy! But no, it was a three-putt birdie to bogey change. -> 4 13) Desaster strikes even more: MOLF drive into a headwind. I gave it too much hyzer, landing short left, which means up the hill. The green is very tricky. From short uphill even more. I threw a layup of the worst kind, landing still short uphill behind bushes. Then I tried to half-run the obstructed 8m putt downhill. It caught edge and rolled, far. Zone forehand, right into the ground. Then jammed a 10m putt. *How?!* *Why?!* -> 5 14) But why not birdie after double-bogey? Threw a nice MOLF drive, landing pin-high left uphill. Again a 5m death-putt, but this time I simply made it ... wasn't difficult. Birdie! -> 2 15) MOLF forehand, a bit right (that's my usual error on this hole: letting the disc rip out too soon). But it was about pin- high, which gives a same-level layup. I did not really run it. Drop-in. -> 3 16) MOLF backhand, a good throw, just right. Missed the 12m putt then made the 3m comebacker. -> 3 17) MOLF forehand, a bit high, but still good. Zone backhand ap- proach, a rather easy shot, as I was already far with the drive. 3m putt. -> 3 18) MOLF backhand, way too high, landing left. 15m jumper. 3m putt. -> 3 This makes +4 (=58) in total. Not really a bad round, just two bad holes: 12 and 13. Making the 5m putt for 2 strokes better. And a conservative play to save 1 stroke or a good play to save 2 strokes. This round could have been around par. The main problem clearly were the various distractions. Also the MOLF is a new disc. It performed well, but many times I had too much hyzer or not enough anny to get a full flight and a straight ahead landing. Playing the round with the Valk probably would have scored a bit better, just because I know this disc better. The practice drives with it were a bit better. But then again, I only threw practice drives when the MOLF drive wasn't as good as I wanted. ;-) Still the MOLF worked well. This disc will likely make my bag ... though I already fear the overlap between it and the Teebird and Valkyrie. Currently my driver section is so simple. There's no overlap. I have straight (Valk), straight-to-fade (Teebird), and big-fade (Felon). Now the MOLF comes with the Eagle line: a bit turn and a bit more fade. I overlaps with the Valk on open dis- tance shots and it overlaps with the Teebird on straight-to-fade or anny-with-fade lines. The MOLF is faster, but the Teebird really isn't a short disc. When bagging the MOLF I'll get a disc selection problem that I haven't had. And for what gain?! But then again, the MOLF provides the some-anny-but-comes-back-at- the-end line, which none of the other discs does well. Plus it has good reliable protential for distance. We'll see ... Some words about the putting. The putts I made were from these distances: - 5 drop-ins - 8 from 3m - 2 from 5m - 1 from 6m - 1 from 8m - 1 from 10m The putts I missed were from these distances: - 3 from 5m - 1 from 6m - 5 from 8m - 1 from 12m - 1 from 13m 11 missed putts on 18 holes. The outside the circle putts I don't expect to make. If I half-run them and they result in short come- backers, everything is fine. The 3 5m misses are bad (only 2 5m putts made). This should improve. Also having made only 1 out of 6 8m putts. This could be better. The comebackers were: - 5 3m - 5 drop-ins - 1 5m - 1 6m after roll - 1 25m after roll Only 4 intentional lay-ups during the round. All the rest were at least half-runs. The outcome was not too bad: 10 out of 13 missed putts were resulted in 3m or less comebackers, which are no prob- lem to make. The 5m and 6m comebackers are not nice, but still makeable. Both were on the same hole (12). The only bad miss and roll was on hole 13, which was desaster already on the approach before. My typical situation after a drive is an 8m putt that I miss with a 3m comebacker that I make. At least I run most putts and make most comebackers. That's good. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
