2020-08-02 Soehnstetten, No Birdies The first time on the course since my thumb injury. After the hot days it only had 20C today, slightly drizzling now and then. I was alone on the course. :-) My goal was to have a good time, playing a round, nothing special, just throwing some nice shots, making some putts, feeling good. I went with my normal bag: - D P3 (2) - JB Zone - Star Valkyrie - ES Teebird - Lucid Felon (The DX Eagle is no longer in the bag. Don't want to carry it.) Scoring par dominated the round. But let's go through the holes: 1) This slightly downhill hole is difficult for me. My current game plan is to throw a backhand anny that pans out and lands flat at the pin. As last time I went with the Felon, and simi- larily went too high, didn't commit to the anny enough. It fought out and landed short left. (A practice shot with the Teebird landed 8m right of the pin. That's how I should throw it.) -> Par. 2) Yanked the Teebird forehand a bit (too much OAT, thus it turned a bit), landing left. -> Par. 3) A much better Valkyrie backhand shot than most times, landing close to the lower end of the steps. -> Par. 4) Because of a slight headwind, I chose to throw the Teebird, not the Valkyrie. The line was perfect, it just didn't go far enough (the Valk probably would have gone 5-10m farther for a long putt). -> Par. 5) Great rip on a Felon forehand. That really went far, but not far enough to putt. Zone flick approach. -> Par. 6) Zone forehand, as always. Landed a bit short. Missed the 8m putt and rolled, unfortunately. Had an 8m comebacker uphill, this one I made. -> Par. 7) Tried the Zone backhand, but it went just straight, going way too long. (A practice shot with the Felon, really low and soft and with hyzer, skipped up to 8m to the pin -- that's the line!) From behind and below a tree, I had a forehand anny to get back up pin-high. Then I layed up because of too much risk, running the long putt. -> Bogey. 8) A great Valkyrie backhand drive, landing pin-high, 8m right. Instead of making the birdie, I hit the cage and it rolled back to me for another equally long putt, that I missed as well. -> Bogey. :-( 9) The Valkyrie backhand drive was good (enough). Missed the 12m putt, but had a drop-in afterwards. -> Par. 10) One of my better shots with the Valkyrie backhand on this hole. Zone flick approach. -> Par. 11) This was a bad Zone forehand drive, too high, thus landing short left. P3 thumber approach. -> Par. 12) As the last times I tried the backhand anny with the Felon. Seems I just don't commit to that line enough (like on hole 1). It landed short left. This is a problem here, because it results in a downhill putt. (Next time I better play the hyzer for an uphill putt, that I can run without risk.) Well, I layed up, still sliding past the pin. Fortunately made the longer-than- wished putt back up. -> Par. 13) Valkyrie backhand drive with good distance, just a bit left. Had no look to the pin, though being pretty close. Threw a short thumber with the P3 to land it upside-down. -> Par. 14) Teebird backhand (could have gone with the Valk as well), landing short but otherwise fine. Missed the 12m putt. -> Par. 15) This hole goes so steep uphill. Each time I throw the back- hand too low into the hill. (And afterwards the forehand practice shot too high, but still better. Maybe I should try a forehand Valk shot for some flip-up and more distance next time.) The Zone approach landed too much left, unfortunately. (Maybe a jump-putt would have been better.) Missed the long putt ... and of course it rolled. But then I made the 10m highlight putt uphill! to save the par. -> Par. 16) A pretty good drive with the Valkyrie, just a bit short. Missed the 12m putt. -> Par. 17) ... and desaster strikes! I gave the backhand another try, I shouldn't have. For the future: I will play this hole for par, from now on, throw a Felon forehand, just for position, then ap- proach nicely and putt. I will not risk anything on this hole anymore. Well, it was *way* too much anny on the Valk, which flew straight into OB. Pinched up to the fence -- Man! Just as I write this I remember that the rules allow now to go back as far as I like not just the one meter relief! -- That might have changed it a bit. Because without room or lines to the pin, I only had a thumber window that leaked right. (A tomahawk would have been better but I cannot throw them reliably.) Throwing four with the 20m low-ceiling death-putt that I never intended to run. I simply layed it up, and took the ... -> Double-Bogey. 18) This time a Teebird backhand, which I threw much too high. (The clue is to keep it low and skip it towards the pin, maybe with the Felon next time.) -> Par. It were 14 pars, 3 bogeys, and 1 double. There was a bit bad luck on some putts and here and there a bad drive. But generally the drives were pretty good. Especially they were often on line. Several were really good (even if they lacked some distance). A good thing was that I made most comebackers, even if they were rather long. This is what helps most building putting confidence: not fearing three-putts. Nothing more that I can say about the bag. It works. No need to change anything. (Except of adding a 9/x/-1/3 type disc somewhen.) Strategically, I could focus more on landing on the lower side of the basket. Soehnstetten has steep hills. Putting up is much easier and less risky than putting down. I should plan more on landing on the easier side of the basket. I've had no problems with my thumb, even thumbers were no prob- lem. Now I'm looking forward to play the next time. :-) http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
