2020-05-18 Soehnstetten With Marius It was a pleasure to play with Marius again. We met in the after- noon, drove to Soehnstetten and played one round, talking as much as we were playing. For him I brought the Champion Roadrunner and Z-Flx Buzzz that he had played with previously, plus a Zero Medium Pure for putting. He used to putt with the Buzzz but today he used the Pure more than the Buzzz. Actually he used the Buzzz only sparingly. The Roadrunner was his main disc, for probably all drives and most other shots, even some putts. Sometimes I suggested to use the putter for the approach/layup/long putt, which usually resulted in better outcomes (less rollaway potential, nicer flight, better control). Mainly he asked for flight paths and angles. I told him why certain shots didn't come out as expected. Maybe I talked a bit too much about technique. Letting him work it out more might be better. Next time. ;-) He scored +14 (=68), including 1 birdie (parking the first hole!), 8 pars, 5 bogeys, 2 double, and 2 triple. Without the multiple bogeys the round would have been decent. I played a pretty good round, but failed bad on two holes, harm- ing the score. - Hole 1: Tried the big anny with the Felon, but wasn't brave enough for enough anny, thus landing left. -> 3. Next time I'll try a straight putter shot. - Hole 2: Forehand Teebird as usually. This time with more power, as planned. But with the tailwind -- wind changes everything -- it flew a bit too far. Missed the 6m putt, unfortunately. -> 3 - Hole 3: Still scared of the cliff on the right. Although I went with the Valk into a slight headwind, I still landed left of the tree. I need to risk more! Had a bad angle round the tree and flicked the Zone badly. -> 4 - Hole 4: Remember to consider the wind! I did not, ripped the Valk on a great tailwind line into a headwind ... It sailed down the cliff. Without any line back up, I took one penalty stroke and a re-throw ... with the Felon, which became a great drive, just not close enough to make the putt. -> 5 :-( Two strokes wasted! - Hole 5: With a backhand this time ... I threw probably my best drive on this hole with the Valkyrie backhand. (Hence remember: On holes 4 and 5, throw Teebirds into the wind and Valks with the wind!) I ran the 15m putt, missing, then made the 3m comebacker. -> 3 - Hole 6: Zone forehand, as usual, just a bit short. -> 3 - Hole 7: One of the two hardest holes on the course. This time I went with a Zone backhand hyzer -- a new thing. Actually it wasn't that bad, only a bit short. It landed in the lift track but 10-15m too short. My second shot was an easy jumper straight down the lift track to the mouth of the bushes right at the basket. Unfortunately this one rolled ... far ... down and left around the big tree. I should have thrown the P3 to have it land as flat as possible. The Zone faded out, stood up and rolled. My throw back up was too short landing on the wrong side of the big tree, with no way to get to the pin in one throw. However, I had to score a triple bogey! -> 6 ... after a not so bad drive. I think I'll try the Zone hyzer once more, next time. - Hole 8: Tried the Felon big anny again. Although better than on hole 1 it still wasn't good. A straight Valkyrie drive would have been the better option. -> 3 - Hole 9: Not that bad of a VL drive, just a bit left and thus right into the middle of the scrubs. A scoober (with the TB) was the only line at all that I had, through a tiny window, despite seeing the basked right before me. At least I nailed the 6m putt. -> 3 - Hole 10: A bad drive with the Valk. I knew that there was a right-to-left wind, but I didn't adjust, thus landed short and left. Another bad Zone upshot and a missed putt. -> 4 - Hole 11: Zone forehand (with a slight hyzer) for the same bir- die as last time. -> 2 :-) Seems to be so easy. - Hole 12: And for the third time a Felon anny with not enough anny. -> 3. Next time I'll go with a Valk hyzer again. - Hole 13: Because of the slight headwind I chose to throw the Teebird. Had a good drive, only a bit short and left. The tricky layup went a bit far, but I made the 8m putt! -> 3. (This somehow got the putter going, it seems.) - Hole 14: Great drive with the Teebird backhand. (I should al- ways drive with the Teebird on this hole.) And ... bam! Birdie. -> 2 - Hole 15: Again with the Teebird backhand ... and again on this hole I didn't throw steep enough, landing short. -> 3 - Hole 16: Valkyrie backhand ... wonderful line. Nailed the 7m putt for my first birdie on this hole! -> 2 - Hole 17: Safe forehand with the Felon. Again I went a bit deep with my forehand Zone upshot, but made the 7m putt! That's unusu- al. -> 3 - Hole 18: Zone backhand, a bit short. Maybe I throw the Teebird next time. -> 3 With +4 (=58) I still achieved one of my better scores. Three birdies are fine, and I had chances for more. 11 pars, 2 bogeys ... fine so far ... but then 1 double and 1 triple, that was the problem of this round. Without the errant Valkyrie shot on 4 and the rollaway on 7 I would have been 4 strokes better and would have tied my personal best on the course. The second half of the round felt good. My putting was great! I don't know, these 7-8m putts felt so easy. Clearly, I was really focussed. This is the clue: If you are focussed, you make these putts. (I'm not sure how to become focussed, but when I am focussed I know it.) This was a great round today! :-) http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
