2020-05-12 Soehnstetten Again After the Corona lockdown, the courses have opened again, with restrictions. I took the opportunity to play a round in Soehnstetten. Vince, whom I met on the course, asked me to play with him. We kept distance but still had the chance to talk. He is the better player, but I had the box on a lot of holes as well, mainly because I crashed my good score late in the round. I played with my normal bag: - D P3 (2) - JB Zone - ES Teebird - Star Valk - Lucid Felon Plus had three discs for some additional shots with me: Prime Trespass, Star Eagle, Pro Valkyrie. Going through the holes: - Hole 1: This holes is problematic for me. Backhand throws real- ly need to fly downward, which I have big problems with. Thus I end up with a high shot that fades left. At least that's safe. Threw the TB, had a long approach, which I flicked with the Zone: hit the top of the basket, missed the long putt thereafter -> 4. (A practice shot with the Felon forehand skipped down the slope. Next time I try an anny with the Felon ... or the Teebird.) - Hole 2: An easy one. Forehand Teebird. That's the right shot, it just always come in too short. I need to throw farther on this hole, each time! Missed the long putt -> 3. - Hole 3: Another difficult hole. I don't have the distance for the big hyzer (in contrast to Vince). In fear of the slope on the right, I throw too straight, which results in an overstable flight because of the uphill shot. I think I need a different line here: Either an intended hyzer to the foot of the steps to play for par, or maybe a big anny with the Felon, or a straight shot with an understable disc, or a slight anny release with the Star Valk. Hmm ... maybe the big Felon anny is the way to go, next time. Anyways, landed really left and short, but left enough for a Zone forehand around the tree -- great shot! -- and a 4m putt -> 3. - Hole 4: The best drive of the day! Valk backhand ... just per- fect: turned a bit and a bit more, but then, at just the right time, it flexed back and faded towards the basket: 4m left! This was my second great drive on this hole. But then -- like the first time -- I missed the 4m birdie putt! :-( That hurts! -> 3. - Hole 5: Never sure what to throw here. Again tried the backhand drive with the straight disc ... and again turned OB! :-( But what's the alternative? A practice shot with the Trespass flew the whole distance but faded quite a bit down. But maybe that's the better option, as you can approach against the hill -- and avoid OB, of course. Forehands are too short (and might roll). A big anny with the Felon could be another option. I should try that one. Anyways, I approached with the Zone forehand and hit the 4m putt -> 4. - Hole 6: Short downhill hole. I used the Zone forehand, as usu- al, but this time it was on an ace run. I missed the pin by one meter at most. Then made the putt! Birdie! :-) -> 2. No question to this game plan. - Hole 7: The difficult downhill hole. Decided to go with the Zone backhand, which was a good decision, but didn't get it down enough. It sailed over the tree. But I approached fine with the Zone backhand and made the 3m putt -> 3. - Hole 8: The Teebird backhand drive was too short and too high. The practice drive with the Valk was farther but the same. The practice drive with the Star Eagle was even farther but still the same. On this hole I really suffered with nose-up into a headwind. The solution here might be as well to throw a big Felon anny. There's hardy landing problems, anything's fine. I just need to get consistent distance on this easy (though 95m) hole. Upshot, putt -> 3. - Hole 9: Backhand Valkyrie, landed a bit left right at the bushes. I approached with a slow, top-landing thumber with the P3, then made the 4m putt -> 3. - Hole 10: Backhand Valkyrie again. The same nose-up problems again, although this hole is almost like the field training si- tuation. The shot was neither good nor bad. But the forehand Zone approach was bad. Then missed the long putt -> 4. - Hole 11: After a bogey follow with a birdie! Forehand Zone close to the basket, 2m putt. Birdie! -> 2. - Hole 12: Big anny flex over the hedge. Came out a bit right, but otherwise great. Had a 7m putt pin-high. Unfortunately I hit the cage and it rolled back to me. Then I had an 8m putt ... but this one I made! :-) This was my best putt today -> 3. - Hole 13: Finally a great Valkyrie shot, straight across, just a tiny bit left behind a bush. There was no line to the basket plus high rollaway potential, thus I lofted the disc upside-down just over the bush to land it under the basket. Drop-in -> 3. - Hole 14: Up the hill again. Backhand Valkyrie, a bit far. More a lay-up than a half-run. Too much risk involved -> 3. - Hole 15: Straight uphill. No good drive with the Valk backhand. Hit the long putt against the basket, resulting in a rollaway. Another long putt, which I also missed. Then dropped it in for bogey -> 4. That was unfortunate. - Hole 16: This Valk backhand shot should have been great on a flat hole, but up the hill it was much too low, it didn't make half the way to the pin. The approach was okay, but then I also three-putted -> 5. :-( That way most likely a concentration prob- lem. - Hole 17: I decided to play safe with a forehand Felon off the tee. That made it up the hill, but far right. Then I approach with the Zone backhand, a bit too far, and missed the 6m putt -> 4. - Hole 18: Teebird backhand, too high and right (the right aspect was a missrelease). Caught the branches and dropped. Approach with the Zone then a short putt for par -> 3. This makes 59 (+5). 2 Birdies, 10 Pars, 5 Bogeys, 1 Double; 1 OB. Sadly I gave the good round away on the last four holes. The problems were distributed over all aspects of the game. I had good and bad drives. I had great and bad approaches. I had solid and missed putts. The Zone was the disc of the day. It made both birdies, and saved several pars with good approaches. The drives: - Valk: 9 BH - Teebird: 3 BH, 1 FH - Zone: 1 BH, 2 FH - Felon: 1 BH, 1 FH For the uphill shots a slightly more understable disc to the Valkyrie might have been an option. Not as understable as the Pro Valk, but maybe one of my DX Teebirds or DX Eagles. (Holes 3, 14, 15, 16, 17.) The Trespass could be a handy disc on the course as well. (Holes 3, 5, 8, 10, 17.) But overall the bag is not bad. The problems were rather caused by lack of practice, than lack of discs. ;-) Clear is: The JB Zone has proven again to be a cornerstone of the bag. I rather drop a driver than the Zone. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
