2020-03-17 Goettingen Hellfire Back at Goettingen. After the wind difficulties with the rather understable Insanity last time, I decided to overcorrect and bring a most overstable driver with me this time: a DGA Hellfire. Again paired with my (now sligthly understable) C P3. The weather was great today. It had around 15 C, a little bit of wind from the north and sun. I came to the course at hole 12's teepad. Thus I thought I could just start there. The drive was okay -- I wasn't quite used to the overstability of the Hellfire yet -- went into the woods on the left. Forehand roller out with the P3 for a 5m putt ... and then -- without any practice putting beforehand -- I FOUR-putted! :-( Horrible! It only underlines the importance of some warm-up putting; getting used to the feel. On the course, I met Lukas, who was practicing putting. We decid- ed to play together. He's a much better player than me. Not only does he smash forehand and backhand drives, he also throws Tomahawks over 100m! E.g. he went long with his Tomahawk high over everything on hole 11. He said he had played -4 yesterday. His round with me must have been similar to that. The discs he had with him were rather backup discs of his: Darts for putting. Star Destroyer for most drives. A hugely nice flying V-Cobra as midrange. And furthermore: Star Colt, Roc3, Star Leo3, Star Teebird, Fury. The Fury felt better to me than the Leo3. The Teebird was completely what I'm used to throw. The Colt is a nice dics, pretty P3-like, but it has some turn, which the P3 has not. It seems I should try to work more with discs like that Fury, but for most shots I'll stick with the strong-HSS pattern. A few words to the round. Actually it were two rounds. On the first round, we had to skip holes 7--9 unfortunately, because of people on the fairways. I ended +4 on the nine holes (5 pars, 4 bogeys (1 OB)). In the beginning I had lots of badly shaped shots, because I wasn't used to the overstability of the Hellfire. For instance, I went much to tight on hole 1, skipping OB. As well, the flat release on hole 2 resulted in a short drive left in the bushes. But then on hole 6 I had a great anny-flex drive, close to the basket. Just not close enough for my off putting. The second (full) round worked out much better. Hole 1: This time a wider forehand, only a bit too wide. Par. Hole 2: Parked it with a hugely beautiful anny flex! What a shot! :-) Drop-in birdie. Hole 3: Maybe I should have rather taken the forehand again, for a par. The backhand was much too high, caught branches, dropped down. Bogey. Hole 4: Backhand P3, a bit too high (you see the pattern). Went OB but made the long putt for par. This first good putt got the putting started. Hole 5: As there were people on the field, we went with forehand rollers. I haven't really used them for distance rollers yet. Thus I released the disc too upright, having it turn left immedi- ately (despite any overstability). The second roller, the same problem. The third one then was really good, and brought me up to the basket. Bogey (which is my par on that long hole.) Hole 6: The distance of the anny-flex shot was fine, only too far right. Bad approach, which still left me with a long putt, that I missed. Bogey (on a birdieable hole). Hole 7: This is the hole I brought the Hellfire for! The expecta- tions were high ... the performance low. :-/ I should have released it with more anny and thrown lower. Went into the bushes left, had to roller out, missed the putt. Bogey. Hole 8: Forehand Hellfire, Layup/half-run. Par. Hole 9: Took a wide forehand route, which was just right, it skipped towards the basket, and then I made the 7m putt. Birdie! Hole 10: I'm not really sure what to throw there. This time I tried a anny flex forehand, but had a bit too much anny, which went onto the concrete and stayed there: OB. From there a fore- hand approach over the concrete area, being sure it would skip in bounds if it lands there. Bogey. Hole 11: Forgot to give it anny in order to get the distance. In consequence I faded in early. I had to merely flick it out, ap- proach and then putt, Another Bogey. Hole 12: Still not enough anny, and too much high, but that is no surprise. Landed on the fairway, only a bit short. Par. This were 2 birdies (on holes I haven't birdied before), 4 pars, and 6 bogeys (2 OBs), i.e. 40 (+4). Apart from the birdies not really a good round, but nonetheless my second best round on the course. (Only my second ever round with only the JB Zone was better: +2). Making the 5-7 meter putts is crucial. Throwing less nose-up would be nice. I'm still not really used to the Hellfire -- a disc I've only thrown for fieldwork up to now. But I think it's a much better disc for this course than a slightly understable disc. I hope to get the chance for further rounds on the course during the next days. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
