2020-03-08 Schizo Average Shot I played a small tournament today. [0] It was doubles with one- self (Schizo). The new lie was in the middle between the two discs (average shot). We played 13 holes at the Ehningen course. My result was rather bad: 14th out of 16 in Open. I scored +2 (41). One birdie, three bogeys. Putting is easier in this format, as you can run the first putt and if you miss, strategically layup the second for an easy drop-in. Or you run both to have two chances to hole out. Thus, bad putting can hardly ruin your round. Out of trouble shots were the most difficult in this format, I think, especially as I had no indentical backups for my discs to perform the same shot twice. Drives were fine, more so because I can throw backhands and fore- hands well. But if you shank the first drive, you need the second to prevent damage. You cannot really attack then. A quick walk through the holes: We started on 17: ES Teebird FH and Star Valk BH. Both landed okay. The new lie was 10m to the pin, with a backstop behind. Unfortunately I couldn't convert. Drop-in par. Hole 1: ES TB FH and Lucid Felon FH. Both flew about the same, landed 4m apart from each other. 8m to the pin ... missed the putt, twice. :-( Par. Hole 2: JB Zone BH anny ... into the woods. (We had wind from the left.) Then forgot to overcorrect: threw the Star Valk BH anny about the same way only much farther. The average lie was still in the scrubs on the right side. Thumbered out with the P3, plus a high P3 anny, for a 5m putt, that I made. Par. Hole 3: Star Valk anny landed at the left side trees. Felon FH, a bit (i.e. much) too high, came in right (which is good) but also short (which is not so good). Felon BH and Zone BH to the basket hill. Was well positioned for a 3m putt. Par. Hole 4: Nice idea with a very high and big Star Valk anny. Only it came down a bit too straight, landing short. The second shot with the Felon BH: hit a tree right away and kicked right. The average lie was not too bad, but good neither. Was not able to get to the basket. Had to layup again. Bogey. Hole 5: Star Valk BH a bit left. Great shot with the DX Teebird (purple), turning a bit right. Unfortunately, couldn't hit the 9m putt. Par. Hole 6: Hit a tree right a way with the ES TB on the BH low hyzer route. For safety, threw the Zone forehand on the left side. Had to lay up. Par. Hole 7: Parked the Felon forehand. Another good forehand with the ES TB, only a bit long. Made the 4m putt. Birdie! Hole 8: Nice throw with the DX TB, went only a bit right. Then another nice throw with the ES TB, only a bit short. Made two nice jump-putts from 15m. Both hit the upper cage rim ... at the same part. Drop-in par. Hole 9: Threw both, DX TB and Star Valk, too right. Had some bushes right in front of the average lie. Thumbered (ES TB) pret- ty steep over them and came up a bit short. Instead of another thumber, I tried a steep Felon forehand hyzer. That was a bad idea. It had not enough angle to work. The putt was too long. Took a bogey. That was unnecessary. Hole 10: Shanked the Star Valk BH drive. This was a disc selec- tion problem. I should have thrown the ES TB as I needed some fade at the end ... if I got behind the bushes. But the Valk might have gone too far, thus I used a bit of hyzer. That clearly was a mistake. To correct I had to throw the Felon forehand wide out to the right. Then thumbered over the bushes with the ES TB. And a second time with the DX EG ... which was not the best disc for that. I should have used the DX TB. Still short. Couldn't convert on the 9m putt. Bogey. Hole 15: Had two great drives. S VL a bit left but over the road. DX TB straighter and a bit shorter. The average lie ... just at the side of the road (nearly OB). Couldn't convert on the 14m putts. Easy par. Hole 16: Busted out two forehands: Felon a bit short, Valkyrie just right. (Again I had the farthest drives of the flight ... but what does that pay for?!) Still too long to putt, but an easy par. I could have made more of the putts, especially as there wasn't as much pressure as in normal play. I could have avoided some of the mistakes. I could have made better second shots on the diffi- cult approaches. It seems that the most difficult part was making the second out- of-trouble shot. I could make one with the normal disc. For thumbers typically the ES TB, but then the second was open, and I not really had good options as I hardly ever throw other discs on such thumbers. But then again, I had not wanted to bag the back- ups. I had my normal bag with me: - D P3 (2) - JB Zone - ES Teebird - Star Valkyrie - Lucid Felon - DX Eagle - DX Teebird - (D P3) The DX Eagle was thrown only once, IIRC. The DX Teebird a few times, for the same slot as the Valk, only a bit less stable. I like the baseline plastic in winter. (We had snow on the ground, today.) The third P3 was only for the case I'd lose one of the other P3s, to have two putters still. For the many forehands, I had to throw, the Felon came to more use than normal. The Zone saw less use, it seems. I had noticably more errant shots than the others. Thus I had to correct more, which often worked out. My two lies typically were much farther apart from each other than for the other players. I lack the consistency they have -- well, they also know the course well, I don't. Although I threw rather far (relative to them) on open holes, I was much worse hitting gaps and throwing ``soft'' shots. I don't have glidy, understable discs that could provide that. All the time I hammer them out. That is a problem. I should practice more in the woods, and go with some understable discs! Overall a day to take a lot with me. Not the best performance by me, but good to have played again.
