2020-02-07 Bad Round Again in Soehnstetten. Today at round 5 C, slight east wind, and frozen ground, partly even covered with snow or ice. I had my normal bag, except that I switched the Star Valkyrie with a DX Teebird, because of better grip (both discs go straight). My game plan changed only in that way that I experimented with big distance annies with the Felon. They worked out rather well. The Drives: - 7 DX Teebird (all BH) - 6 ES Teebird (3 BH, 3 FH) - 3 Felon (all BH annies) - 2 Zone (1 BH, 1 FH) The Upshots: ... were rather bad. The second shots -- the ones that should put the disc under the basket -- went awry too often. The Putting: It was bad. Seven missed putts from makeable distances. During the round I lost my putting feel, thus missing even short putts -- horrible! Some holes were missed by bad drives, some by bad upshots, some by bad putts. I had problems in all areas, alternating during the round. A walkthrough: #1: ES TB BH way too left. I need to remember going pretty right to let it fade towards the basket. Or go with a forehand, like I placed the Eagle forehand at the edge of the circle. After a hor- rible upshots I took a bogey. #2: The ES TB FH is pretty routine now, only leaving it short each time. Easy par. #3: This time I tried a big anny with the Felon. It went far, and even more left than the last time. Tried to flick hyzer round the trees on the left, but went too straight and deep. Had to take a bogey. Still wondering how to attack the hole. Maybe be bold enough to land right at the edge ... #4: This time I shanked it. DX TB with hyzer instead of flat into the trees on the left. Zone hyzer too short, again in the trees. Another bogey. #5: Into the wind, ES TB FH too high. Was lucky to have it rest in bounds. Upshot too far down. And another bogey. #6: Zone FH as usual, just a bit left. 8m putt, hit it onto the band ... rollaway behind my old lie. Layup from 11m. And yet another bogey (after a birdie look). #7: The low Zone BH shot didn't work out that well today. I didn't keep it low enough, thus it flew over to the left side. There it lay only 15m from the basket, pin-high. Much too short layup, thus a long putt, which I air-balled, leading to a rolla- way behind the bush. Back up and then in, finally. Double bogey (for what could have been an easy par). #8: ES TB BH, short as always, but that wasn't the problem. After my approach two missed putts and the first bogey on this hole. #9: The DX TB flew great ... but to 8's basket instead of 9's. Par. #10: The first great drive: A laser beam with the DX TB straight towards the basket. The distance was not quite there, but it was as good as I can expect it. Bad upshot (too short) and then I missed the 5m putt. Bogey. #11: Short uphill, this time with the ES TB forehand. Went a bit too much right -- a common problem, supported by the left-to- right wind. Missed the long putt but made the par. #12: This time I decided to go over the scrubs with a Felon anny. (A line that wasn't possible when the trees still stood.) That worked out great. I even went long. The problem with going long or left: You have a death-putt. I thus layed up. Par. #13: Another great DX TB drive -- laser straight. Only it slid under the tree right by the basket. I had no line, despite being only 8m away. Skipped out, barely. Still obstructed, missed the 4m putt! Another first-time bogey. #14: DX TB BH for an easy par. (The additional Felon anny shot was parked 2m from the basket.) #15: Tried the Felon anny first time now (but the additional DX TB BH came out equally good). Only a par. #16: Another one of the good DX TB drives. On a slight anny to about as good as can be expected. Not enough for birdie, but enough for an easy par. #17: And again slight anny with the DX TB. (The lie was a good as the additional shots with the ES TB and Felon forehand.) A bad second shot (Zone flat, waiting for the fade, instead of the sim- ple hyzer I performed with the Felon right thereafter). Tried to run the putt, missed rather far, was lucky to get the bogey. #18: Not the best but an okay ES TB BH shot. Missed the 8m putt low (still missed the putting feeling). Par again. This makes a horrible score of 65 (+11). It's my worst round in Soehnstetten. The biggest problem was the bad putting form. This might have been caused by omitting the putting practice before the round, because some guys were trying lines at the practice basket. Thus I simply started with no practice. But as well I had a whole bunch of bad upshots. Maybe that's also related to the missing putting practice ... Some drives were bad, but others were good, too. Not too much to blame here. I had some bad luck with the rollaways. The DX TB was as good as the S VL can be expected to be. Because of better grip it probably was the better choice today. (The ES TB wasn't a problem to grip, though.) The big Felon annies worked well. I think I'm gonna utilize these more often in the future (on Wiley #1 maybe). For max distance I think I need turn plus fade (e.g. the DX Ea- gle). The DX TB needs a fully flat release; the S VL does only a slightest S-curve, which is difficult to hit just right. Anyways, gained lots of experiences, today. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
