2019-11-25 Comets vs. Rest A calm day on the Wiley course, a bit under 10C and fog, wet grass. Still, a great day to disc golf, especially one of the kind I like a lot. Today I had my Comets with me: The old flat ESP Comet, which once had been my main disc, and a BigZ Comet, which is rather under- stable. First I played Comets vs. the rest of the bag. Actually it was more the ESP Comet competing against the current Wiley bag, con- sisting of D P3, JB Zone and S VL. But I played a lot of addi- tional shots. Hole 1: - Good enough drive with the Valk, upshot, putt -> 3. - Good drive with the Comet, flipped up nicely, just went not as far as the Valk, upshot, but then a missed putt -> 4. Hole 2: - Zone backhand, made the long putt -> 2. - Ordinary par -> 3. Hole 3: - Bad shot with the Valk, long good upshot with the Zone -> 3. - Not enough distance on the drive, upshot, missed putt -> 4. Hole 4: - Took the new anny backhand line with the P3, worked out fine, but then missed the putt -> 3. - Same line with the Comet, had to approach -> 3. Hole 5: - Zone forehand, missed the putt -> 3. - Straight Comet backhand, missed the putt as well -> 3. Hole 6: - Zone forehand, had to approach -> 3. - Long backhand anny -> 3. Hole 7: - Zone forehand up to the basket -> 2. - Long backhand anny -> 3. Hole 8: - Fine big hyzer with the Valk -> 2. - Most perfect throw with the Comet, straight through it all, such a wonderful line, so much flight time, a beauty to watch! -> 2. Hole 9: - Good shot with the Valk, had to approach -> 3. - Not enough distance with the Comet, it took two approaches -> 4. This makes another -3 (24), tieing personal best, for the Wiley bag (including two missed putts). The Comets scored +2 (29), caused by missed putts -- putting with Comets is different -- and lack of distance on the long holes. Then I played Eagle vs. Valkyrie. The plan was to throw all drives with those discs. Hole 1: It started with two missed putts -> 3/4. Hole 2: Not getting birdies on hole 2 :-( -> 3/3. Hole 3: Both drives a bit too wide -> 3/3. Hole 4: P3 backhand annies for both teams here, both missed the putt -> 3/3. Hole 5: Zone FH and P3 stall-out backhand, one putt missed, the other made -> 3/2. Hole 6: Here I tried something new, which worked out perfectly. I went with a low and strong hyzer forehand around the trees. This is a big gap and a high-percentage shot. I think that this is the way to go from now on. Missed one of the putts, thus only -> 3/2. Hole 7: The same here, also the low hyzer with a straightish driver. Worked out just as well -> 3/2. Hole 8: Both drives clipped the twigs on the right, up right hand side, needed longer approaches, furthermore had a through the chains miss (on hyzer, right hand side, right through) -> 3/4. Hole 9: Two good drives, approaches -> 3/3. This makes even (27) and -1 (26). If I play two teams at the same time, scoring is not as clear to separate, sometimes. The Eagle team scored all pars, the Valk made three birdies and two bogeys. That's a bit arbitrary and not fully comparable to a normal round. Some highlights: - Tieing my personal best for the fifth time, again with a three disc setup: P3, Zo, VL. - The Comet shot on hole 8. Such a beauty! There's nothing like a Comet! :-) - The new low FH hyzer line on 6 and 7. It worked out so well. - The big BH anny line on 4 with the P3 ... or rather not, as I parked the hole with the Zone forehand on a practice throw even better!? - And then for the first time I successfully executed the long imagined big high anny shot with the overstable disc on hole 3. I threw the Felon on a huge anny high over the trees, where we both lost it out of our eyes. We only saw it starting to fight out of the anny. We didn't see it land, nor hear it drop any- where. Eventually I found it 15m long of the basket! What a shot! Although I didn't see it fly, from the location where it landed, it is clear that it all worked out just as I imagined. It's not the line I would take to score well, it's more a Simon line, which I simply wanted to throw to confirm that it works. That was a big shot ... but not as great as the Comet shot on 8. ;-) http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
