2019-04-18 Mountain Disc Golf After one year, I've been back to Toni's great private course in Gunzesried. There had been a tournament lately and the holes and signs were a bit scrambled. I played the course as best as I remembered the old layout with 11 holes. With me I had two discs, a D-Line P3 and the Star Eagle. I started on the lower left corner of the course, which is 44m/+12m, much uphill through a tiny windows under some trees. This is the perfect thumber hole ... actually, the hole course motivates so many thumbers! :-) I got the line very well, hitting the window with the disc upside down just between the rocks, hav- ing a small skip there. It got caught by the small ditch three or four meters from the basket. Easy putt an my first birdie! :-) Then the hole straight up the middle to the basket right at the couple of trees, 58m/+8m. My BH drive flew with too much hyzer, thus faded left. I couldn't really run the putt, with too much branches in between (and the risk of a rollaway). Settled for par. Then over to the right side, I took the hole on the upper right corner, 59m/+17. This is the only hole I drove with the P3, but still I didn't throw it anny enough for the elevation, thus it ended up in scrubs left. The long putt after the straddle FH ap- proach skipped out of the basket. Had to take a bogey. Now the crossing from the right to the left side, 81m/-1m. I had just a bit too much juice on my forehand, having the disc fly 2m into the OB long. Couldn't convert the putt. Had to settle with bogey, again. Next up the left side, the hole with the thorns wall, 50m/+15m. Threw a standard BH drive to the bottom of the OB thorns wall. Then an easy thumber with the P3 right under the basket. This thumber shot is really easy and safe concerning rollaways and stuff, but if you don't have it, you'll have a hard time getting the disc safely up there. For me it was an easy par. Then the big shot: From the upper left corner to the basket next to the shed (lower right corner of the upper part of the course). A long shot with quite some elevation drop (into a slight but constant headwind). There was no sign for the length and eleva- tion of the hole. I'd say it's maybe 120m/-22m. My BH drive with the Eagle was a bit too high for being really good, but although the headwind lifted it, it also straightend it out. It landed al- most pin-height but left, a bit up the hill. My approach, howev- er, was bad, much too short. Had a long putt that I missed. Had a comebacker that I missed. Sadly took a double bogey, after a pretty decent drive. :-( Then the gap hole behind the shed from the right side to the mid- dle, 58m/+3m. When I played the course for a fun round with Lydi two days ago, I parked it with a perfect thumber. This hole has the most beautiful thumber line. It's simply made to be thum- bered! This time, unfortunately, my grip might have slipped or something, well, the disc wobbled and never really flew. At least it landed on the ridge halfway to the basket, giving me an upshot. Then missed the putt. Bogey! That was sad. :-( Next up, back again round the other side of the shed to the basket a bit more left, 62m/+2m. Left the drive a bit left and uphill, but sank a 9m putt downhill. Birdie! :-) Now down to the lower part of the course, a gigantic drop: 80m/-31m. If you have a forehand and a disc with fade, the shot is not too difficult, but it's not easy to get it right, as there is OB long just a few meters behind the basket. I had not enough hyzer on the disc to drop faster, thus it sailed into the OB. The putt from the OB line was not too long, but a bit too risky, so I layed up for a bogey. Then the hole on the lowest right corner (the tee next to his house), 78m/+16m. Had not enough anny for that much uphill. (I don't trust the Eagle enough to come back for more anny released flex shots, which would be ideal to throw over the ridge right in front of the tee, and then land more center fairway.) My approach was horrible, making no progress towards the basket, but at least positioning me center fairway. Thumbered with the P3 up to the basket, dropped in for another bogey. Last hole is on the lower left corner a short 40m/+8m dogleg left. An easy hole as you can crash the disc simply into the wall, more left is better but it doesn't matter too much. Then you have a rather short putt with a nice backstop right behind the basket. I got another birdie. :-) This made 3 birdies, 2 pars, 5 bogeys and 1 double-bogey, for a +4 on the 11-hole par-33 course. Having such few pars is partly the result of the course, being difficult, but also caused by some miss-putts and as well a result of me playing a bit more ag- gressive, which usually is good for my defensive natural style. The D P3/S EG disc combination played out well, all in all. For the uphill shots, though, a disc with less fade or a lighter discs would have been nice to have. The course for sure is very thumber friendly. This I appreciate. :-) I am very thankful for Toni and his friends having this course and letting me play on it. It is a peasure! Today the weather was hugely beautiful, as well. What a delight! :-) http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
