2019-03-16 Strong Wind I think I've never played in as much wind as today. Wiley with a strong west wind. I started at hole 3 but, of course, in such wind conditions, hole 1 is the most interesting to write about, so I write about it first, nonetheless. Hole 1: Right into a really strong headwind. I threw my Felon with a flat release. It leaked slightly right all the way, but came back with a good fade at the end. Wow, I never had any turn with the Felon, until today. Still, it was far from flipping. Landed a bit short. Approached with the JB Zone. Landed a bit right of the basket. had to putt with a rightwind. Was too shy, only gave it a half run, upside-down. Had a drop-in for bogey. Hole 2: Wind from the front-right. Threw the Felon forehand. Got the nose up too much, Had a stall-out, thus landed quite short. Don't remember the second shot, but it was too short. Chipped the Zone on a low anny-flex line to the basket. That was a nice shot! Drop-in bogey, again. Hole 3: Now the wind from the left. Threw the usual big hyzer with the Star Valkyrie. The wind pushed it a bit to the right, thus had to approach (probably with the Zone). Then a putt for par. Hole 4: Forehand Felon ... not the worst choice, but I didn't consider the front-left wind, which lifted the disc instantly, pushed it right and down the slope. I searched several minutes for it, until I found it at the bottom of the slope. Luckily I had a small window from there for a tomahawk shot. Took the Zone. Usually I throw thumbers, here I needed the other direction shot. Unfortunately, I forgot to adjust the angle from one o'clock to eleven o'clock. Thus the tomahawk became a forehand roller ... rolling far past the basket. Had to approach back (again with the Zone) and putt for bogey. Hole 5: 50m straight with a right-tailwind. Usually I throw a P3 backhand. Because of the wind I threw the Zone forehand. That turned out great. Bang: birdie! Hole 6: Threw the Valk forehand. It got carried a bit too much by the tailwind. Got into some bushes. The approach was okay, the putt was bad, had to do another one for bogey. (My practice dive with the Felon forehand was worse. But my practice drive with the ES Teebird: a thumber through the small window, was almost parked. I took that route last year already. It still is there. Maybe I could throw it even in the summer, just hitting through the leaves? It's such a perfect line ...) Hole 7: The second right-turn hole. Again the Valk forehand. Threw it onto the first tree. Then used the Zone forehand for a nice approach. Putted for par. Hole 8: The usual big hyzer, unspectacular to par. (My practice drive with the Felon forehand was equally good.) Hole 9: Again in the open with a wind from the right. I wanted to throw the Valk with a bit of anny to prevent it getting lifted by the wind. Unfortunately, got way too much height on the shot. The disc hit the branches high on the right side. Didn't made much distance. Another Valk forehand (IIRC), The putt just a bit too far into the strong headwind. Needed another putt for bogey. (My practice drive with the ES Teebird backhand landed just before the bushes on the left (wind got the underside). My other prac- tice drive with the Felon forehand landed just before the bushes as well, but on the straight line.) The whole round scored four over par (31). I got a birdie, but also five bogeys. The wind clearly was the ruling factor. In the bag I had: - Felon: Used for 3 drives (2 FH, 1 BH). Necessary overstability today. - Star Valkyrie: Used for 5 drives (2 FH, 3 BH). Alright. - ES TB: Used for 1 drive and maybe one other shot. Not over- stable enough for today's wind. - JB Zone: Probably my most thrown disc today. Almost all ap- proaches and about half of the putts. - D P3: Only for putting today. Partly normal, partly upside- down. My putting was pretty good today, despite the wind! I putted nor- mal and upside-down. I had big focus on not exposing the under- side of the disc to the wind. This worked well. I putted a lot of spin-style and hard. That worked out well. Overall it was a good round. It showed some improvements of mine during the last time. It also created experiences with this much wind. http://marmaro.de/discgolf/ markus schnalke
