2018-03-21 Bag Considerations Currently I'm thinking about my bag again. At the P&A my feeling was that I had reached some holes just barely with my P3 or Zone. A Teebird would have been too much and the Comet (my only mi- drange, currently) has not the needed fade in these cases. Thus, I'm now thinking about adding a straight-to-fade midrange to fill this hole. But on the other side, I don't want to add more and more discs, thus I also question the real need for that new disc. Let's go through my (new) current bag, as I would take it with me for a tournament: - D P2 (2): putting - ESP Zone: short OS drives, utility - D P3: short straight drives with some fade - Retro Pure: short US throws - ESP Comet: neutral midrange work - (Lucid Felon: if real OS is needed) - Champ Teebird: straight to fade - DX Teebird: straight with minimal or no fade - Prime Trespass: max distance I see two possible holes in this bag: - An understable driver for rollers, but as I don't plan to throw rollers in the near future, this doesn't matter. I am technically able to roll any of my discs, although not comfortably ... but rollers aren't part of my game yet, anyway. - A more overstable midrange. The Comet does not hold up in windy situations. I then throw my Zone or P3 at full power or a Teebird powered down, but that's not ideal. Something in between would be nice to have. Maybe it's worth to invest an additional disc there ... Now a look at overlap: - The Pure and the Comet overlap. I'd like to drop the Pure, but it performs slower annies better than the Comet, which needs more speed. I'm unsure here. Needs more testing ... - The P3 and the Comet overlap on some drives, but the Comet goes a bit farther and holds lines more neutral and without fade, whereas the P3 provides some fade at the end, even for big an- nies. Thus it feels to be okay to bag both of them. - The P2s would overlap with he P3 if I'd throw them. Carrying two separate putting putters is an expensive investment for a disc-minimalist bag. Well ... - The Felon is a new disc. I haven't tested it enough, so I'm not sure how it'll relate to my Champion Teebird. There might be some overlap. Let's have a look at other bags, I like. Barrett Johnson: [0] - KC Aviar (2): putting and throwing - Shark (3): different stabilities - Eagle - Teebird - Firebird (2) - Destroyer (2) The bag is so simple and small (11 discs). My putters are crowded in comparision. He relies more on midranges. Casey Wright: [1] - KC Aviar (4): putting and throwing - Champ Glo Mako - Star Roc - Teebird (2) - Firebird (2) - Champ Roadrunner: rollers - Destroyer (6) The system is similar: Two discs in each speed class or slot, with different stabilities. The slots being roughly: Putting/driving putters, mids, fairways, OS control drivers, dis- tance drivers, plus a roller disc maybe. Valarie Jenkins: [2] - KC/DX Aviar (2) - Rocs (3) - Gator - Teebird - Eagle - Roadrunner - Starfire - Wraith Again, about the same slots or classes. wims (DGCR): [3] - P2 - Envy - Harp - FD - Spark - Wraith No midranges, but he wrote me privately, that he sometimes bags Truth and Verdict as midranges. Again the same schema: Two in each class -- one rather neutral/straight, the other overstable/stable with fade. Now my bag again: - P2 (2) - Zone - P3 - Pure? - ??? - Comet - Champ Teebird - DX Teebird - (Felon) - Trespass Similar slots. The Pure might be expendable. There's the empty slot in the midranges. The putting putters are separate, but well, that's how it is. Everything else matches quite well. Looks as if I'm on a good way. Lastly a look at a more minimal bag: Streets (DGCR): [4] - Soft Wizard (4): putting and throwing - Z Wasp - Z Buzzz - Star Valkyrie - Pro Valkyrie The fairway and distance drivers are merged into one group. The really beefy disc is missing. Apart from that it has a similar system. Danny Lindahl talked about having three discs in each group, ranging from overstable through stable/neutral to understable. [5] I don't think that this is necessary in all groups. If you like to reduce discs, than you probably leave the understable discs out first. At least this is what I encounter in the mentioned bags. In Danny's system my bag (without putting putters) looks like this: -- ...Trespass... -- Felon Champ TB DX TB -- -- ???? ...Comet... Zone P3 ...Pure... I only have one distance driver, which I consider appropriate at my level. The fairways miss out the roller disc. Within the mids, the empty slot becomes apparent. Instead of the Pure, Danny ei- ther throws his putting putters or he has no need for a slow understable disc. What does all this mean to me? First, my bag isn't completely wrong. It has a system and this system can be found in a lot of other bags as well. Second, my bag is fatter in the putter class than in the distance drivers, which is inverted for most advanced players. Thus, this might change over time in my bag. Third, the slightly overstable mid is the disc I'm lacking the most. I think I'm gonna give one a try and see how it works out. (The narrowed down candidates currently are Wasp, Verdict, and MD3.)
