2017-08-24 Fistball team on the course My main sports is Fistball. [0] Now, during summer break, I wanted to play some disc golf with my team, to give them an im- pression of a different sports, which we do from time to time. Last week I brought a bunch of discs to the Fistball training, to show them the basic technique of driving and let them give it some shots. One day later, we went to the local disc golf course (Nine 50-100m holes, partly open, partly wooded). There we prac- ticed some putting, then played a round in two groups. Peter, a local guy we met on the course, guided one group, I guided the other. Each of the players got one stable (i.e. straight) disc -- a putter or a midrange. They had: Pure, P2, Aero, Buzzz, Comet, Shark, or a beat Roc. It was their first time playing disc golf and they played better than I had expected. Their main problems were OAT and nose-up, unsurprisingly. The girls suffered under missing distance, whereas the guys threw farther than I thought they would. Their play was quite creative, facilitating forehand rollers every now and then. Caused by them being used to the ball-throwing motion, they, in general, threw a lot of forehands. One guy had an X Comet. He couldn't get a nice flight out of it but he could get the disc to the right place somehow. Eventually he came in second best. The girls had cleaner form and nicer flights, but just couldn't get the discs far enough. Lightweight midranges would have been best for them. I think that straight 165g baseline plastic midranges would have been the perfect discs for most of the players. Coming to the successes: One of the guys scored a Birdie on the second hole (open 65m) on his first time playing disc golf with a Pro-D Buzzz. Another guy, which had an S-Line P2, was given a Destroyer to try out. He flicked it 100m to the pin for an easy Birdie! On his first day! Unbelievable! The nicest shot, however, was one girl throwing her Aero from 20m on an S-curve around a tree right into the basket. Such a lovely shot! But most of all: They all had fun playing disc golf! :-) Their scores ranged from 33 to 45 on an easy par 27 course. The scores on each hole averaged between 3.4 and 5.0. Now to my own performance on that day. I chose the Zone (instead of a stable disc), because I wanted to get familiar with it. I bought it just recently and had never used it on the course. It started off horribly. 60m wooded hole: I drive it against the first tree, it rolls back behind the tee. Next shot, next tree. I ended up with a Triple Bogey. On the next, quite similar hole, I improved to a Bogey. Then got a Par. The following open 100m hole, I tried a Thumber, which went bad and left me with a Bogey. Thus I went for a normal drive on the similar hole afterwards. That worked out much better, scoring Par. The remaining four holes I scored Par as well. Thus, for one part it was getting used to the disc at all (first two holes I played) and for a second part it was playing just ordinarily, despite the oversta- bility (bad Thumber drive). If I had had experience with the disc, or if I would have chosen my most loved ESP Comet (which no one else picked), I think I would have scored around one over Par. For this day, however, it was just right picking a new disc -- I learned a lot about this disc and my situation was more similar to the situation my friends were in. Putting with the Zone wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be. It actually didn't matter much compared to the P2s I normally putt with.
